Greatest Love Story of All Time
How would you answer John Wesley's great question: How is it with your soul? Maybe things are great, and spiritually, you feel like you are at an oasis with cool breezes blowing and springs of refreshing water are bubbling up all around you - things are lush and green and ALIVE! But, then again, maybe your soul feels like a dry, dusty desert where things are bleak and any life you can see is stunted and survival is about the best you can hope for right now and you wonder, "How long, O Lord? How long!" If your soul is healthy and growing, make sure you celebrate that and keep up the good work! But, on the other hand, if your soul is neglected and starving and you're just putting one spiritual foot ahead of the other, it's time for a change! If this is you, you're ready for a spiritual refreshing, and the Dog Days of summer are a perfect time for a bit of "Soul Irrigation!" Join us for our late summer series that we're calling: It's Time for a Change! (Permalink)

Excuse Me! I Have an Announcement!
Sure, we ought to be skeptical of anyone who thinks they can share anything of real substance on a bumper sticker. Our faith in the God of Jesus Christ cannot be reduced to slogans, signs, or tweets. But a good bumper sticker will get us thinking- it will get our imaginations moving in an entirely new direction. In our current sermon series, our pastors will be looking at significant people from the Old Testament and asking what they have to say to us today. And just for fun we're going to ask, if Noah's ark or Ahab's chariot had a bumper sticker, what would it say? What would it take to get our imaginations moving in an entirely new direction when it comes to some of the tried and true characters from Israel's history? (Permalink)

Lord of the Pawn, Flea Market, and Garage Sale
The promises of God have offered us comfort and hope for generations. But there are promises and then there are promises. This morning we're going to look at the fifth chapter of Paul's letter to the church at Rome to discover a couple of important promises that lie at the very heart of the gospel. You are invited to write the first name or initials of someone you are having a hard time 'holding onto' on one of the crosses in the sanctuary. During the singing of the last hymn you will be invited to go forward and put it in the cross. (Permalink)

A Surprising Lenten Checklist
Have you heard of author, actor and humorist Robert Benchley's 'Law of Distinction?' Basically, it says there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who believe there are two kinds of people in the world and those who don't. I believe that to be true, though I typically change the two types of people to suit my particular bias of the moment. Right now, I'm kind of on a 'To Do List' kick, so I believe there are two kinds of people in the world: those who keep lists and those who don't. I have a Lenten Check List and I hope you do as well - but I'm betting my list is more than a little different than yours. My list this year includes some things by devotional author Selwyn Hughes ('borrowed' first by Len Sweet), that, might surprise you. This morning I'm going to share with you a Lenten list that includes us finding ways to steal, drink, lie and swear as much as possible during Lent! Yep! Remember, you heard it here first! Now, PLEASE pay close attention this morning because what I actually say might be somewhat different than what you think I'm going to say based on this list! (Permalink)

The Dreaming Always Comes First!
I am often called a day dreamer and I always say 'Thank You!' I consider that a great compliment; even if it isn't always meant as one. Now, I will agree that sometimes day dreams are a pleasant way to pass a few dull moments - but that isn't all they are. No way! Dreaming is for our well-being as well. I am not only fun (most of the time), but it is necessary p issues and have done enough research certainly no doctor but I have enough slee t levels of sleep, often referred to as that I know if I can't get to the deepes REM sleep, I am not really resting - and that can not only contribute to stress, s health issues and even death in extreme but, believe it or not, it can cause seriou you believe author Len Sweet (and I do), situations. We NEED to dream to live. If it turns out that we need to dream for our health but also for some of our biggest ideas. I was reading one of Dr. Sweet's articles some time back and he wondered, night), how can we ever manage to accom- if we can't dream of big things (day or mankind's greatest achievements have plish them? It is amazing how many of started out as a dream. And, it turns out, God is a big believer in dreams and eed and to both challenge and encourage uses them to give us information we n g hearing about this special means of us. We'll spend a few moments this mornin God/us communication (Permalink)

The Christmas Willies
Christmas is such a warm there are some aspects of it that can give us pause. In fact, the more we explore the feelings and actions of the various people in that first rstand that this was no pageant, Christmas, the more we begin to unde s Mary and Joseph's lives and they no idyllic nativity scene. This wa difficult circumstances. What can are being lived out in some pretty we understand about our own worries and fears (and God's response ves in Joseph's shoes that first to those fears) by putting oursel Christmas? (Permalink)
